It provides you with the tools to start thinking in a different fashion about the way in which you invest, introducing the ways of over-riding the emotional distractions that will bedevil the pursuit of a value approach and ultimately think and act differently from the herd. Being someone who works in finance I found the book extremely interesting and insightful. I have met James Montier and found him incredibly sharp and honest. In a time when everybody in asset management is concerned about making a quick sale or a short-term profit, the book reminds us of what investing is supposed to be - a long term endeavor. A terrible book. A total waste of time. Repeating itself again and again without adding any value. Montier is an asset allocation manager at GMO, a Boston based asset manager co-founded by Jeremy Grantham, which practices value based investing as propounded by Benjamin Graham.

Those columns cover all of the material summarised in a very organised fashion in his prior work "Behavioural Investing". This makes the current volume somewhat less compelling an acquisition if you own Montier's other works. But, for those fans of Montier's work and style this collection contains a neat amount of meaningful prose. The topics covered are vintage behavioural finance: a frontal attack on the Efficient Market Hypothesis and Capital Asset Pricing Model, the flaws of DCF, the overpricing of IPOs as proof positive of investors' "hope eternal" mindset, the mismatch between market timing and market cycles, the bias against cheap stocks and generally the soundness of the Value Based Investing approach compared to just about anything else.

Montier also dwells on the more psychological hindrances to rational investing and suggests some simple measures to help us become better investors by avoiding procrastination, keeping a trading diary, designing and documenting an investment process to ensure pre-commitment and backcasting DCF assumptions. All in all, this volume is a collection of pleasant columns through which we can acquire bite-sized insights into behavioural investing. It is, though, not a substitute for Montier's far better presented and more solidly argued analyses in his other books on the subject.

Good value tools. Montier offers some clear insights in to the problems of classical finance theory and proffers insights from psychology, behavioural investing and value philosophy. Contrary to come reviewers, in my view, he also offers some solid tools to use for your own value investing but readily gives references to works which more thoroughly explore the practical side.

These papers were first published as part of his research while at Soc Gen investment bank and before that Dresdner Kleinwort, and so as an institutional investors you should have come across most of these ideas. However, they will possibly be new to many "retail" investors and I believe worth reading.

They are fairly easy to understand and written with clarity and humour and with good sources for the reader to delve further into the work. The psychology or behavioural aspects of value investing The philosophy of value investing Some evidence for value investing Techniques and thoughts on asset value for value investing If you like it, you will also want to go to some sources such as Graham and Dodd; and Greenwald. Caveat: I have worked with Montier, although not very closely, and I have a bias to value investing.

I liked this book a lot. As somebody recently interested in investing in stocks due to the rubbish saving rates I started reading this recently and found the advice to be commmon sense but then again most of the best ideas are as the author himself notes time and again. For instance I think most people investing in firms have no idea what actual "value" is. I thought I knew what value was and have to say was way off. It goes much beyond what the "valuation" of a company is. It's not just the long term increase in the price of your shares, but based on foundations such as future demand for a product and historically most stocks perform in the same way.

If you think that you'll make massive gains investing in a company that does things like any other in the industry, then you'll read this book with regret because it simply isn't the case. So I have a better understanding of value and how it can grow or be eroded. What I appreciated was that the author sensibly highlighted the long term nature of investing. If you want to safely invest with secure returns you'll be investing in companies with a long term plan. Of course no investment is guaranteed, but using the tips about investing with all the information avaliable and appreciating the past, you'll have a very strong foundation to justify investments to yourself.
